"Cooking by the Book" also known as The Cake Song, is taken from Nickelodeon's children's show Lazytown. The show features many quirky moments of insanity, particularly regarding its music.

The first site was created in September 2005, but it did not take off until May. The user Cthulhu138 began to create sites that showed a picture of cake along with the lyrics to the "Cooking by the Book" song. Eventually, it was noticed by many ytmnd users and the fad quickly took off.

There are many varieties of the fad:

  • Various people dancing and moving to the song's rhythm
  • Pictures of various other cakes
  • Various people getting tortured by the song. One of the most popular sites to spawn from the Cake Song fad was syncan's "The Ultimate Suffering", which showed a modified scene from the movie The Princess Bride[1], where Wesley was tortured by the song's popish rhythm. This site received a very high rating and was made a Moderators Favorite as well as placed in the YTMND Hall of Fame.
  • In rare instances, the song may be used for sexual metaphors. For example, the cake song bleeped to sound like she is saying "fucking" instead of cooking, etc.

The Cake Song was included in Volume 11 of the YTMND Soundtrack.

Impact of the Fad

The cake fad helped increase the popularity of the show on ytmnd, but has also brought in some unpleasant elements. Since the fad first became popular, it has brought in sexually explicit sites as well as sites that can be construed as encouraging pedophilia. As a result, Stephanie is often the victim of on-going sexual jokes.

Sample lyrics

It's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake!
If the way is hazy,
You gotta do the cooking by the book!
You know you can't be lazy!
Never use a messy recipe!
The cake will end up crazy!
If you do the cooking by the book,
Then you'll have a cake!
