IRC refers to the Internet Relay Chat protocol, RFC 1459. I should point out early that if you did not know what IRC stood for, your experience will not be a pleasant one for quite a few months. IRC was designed in 1988 and hasn't changed much since, so generally the inhabitants who are all more mature than you will not tolerate little boys running around in their channel (well, depends on the channel. Some welcome little boys with open arms. And legs.) unwillingly radiating their newfagaity everywhere.
Internet Relay chat (IRC) is a slightly aged but well-situated protocol designed to support internet users' ability to get each other RAGED!, shirk chore duties from their parents, and display ridiculous, work-unsafe ASCII art for hapless wanderers who "downloaded something cool-looking when i was looking for scatporn with women named Khalee in it last night.fact"

In common use, however, the term is used to refer to whichever networks and servers one familiarizes oneself which run IRC services. A network is a tree of linked servers which can all share channels, or "rooms," and for which there are one set of administrators and operators. Channel communications are distributed network-wide so that the server you choose to use does not prevent you from talking to any one particular person on that network (with all the usual optimization one might imagine).  There are a vast number of separate IRC networks.
IRC was invented by a half-elven dwarf warrior with a +4 staff of despicable grooming habit and a shield of venetian darkness by the name of Dais ChRoNiCuS IV during the season of the feast of crumbly pringles, when a kobold detachment raided his camp on the outskirts of the Fanghorn Forest and he was forced to communicate asynchronomously with the Ents to focus on and survive the subsequent battle. It is widely believed by astrophysicists who never got laid in college and read ridiculously long books written by people with four initials that Dais used Visual DarkBASIC 2.1 .NET service pack 3. Because the software was so successfulfact, its protocol was subsequently nominated for inclusion in the Internet FAQ Archives, and thus was RFC 1459 drafted by the Network Breaking Group during the tides of March, 1993 BCE.

In the current era, however, there are a multitude of IRC clients, all written in Visual DarkBASIC 2.1 .NET service pack 3, of course. The only one that works is BitchX, which the soviets used during the Cold War to let each other all know that their power was out and there was no bread or water to be found, anywhere.fact

In general, YTMND users are better off staying on the YTMND Forums, where their activity and speech is monitored and regulated. IRC is a dangerous place for a newcomer to the Internet, because everyone who uses it is inherently angry at themselves for not having a real life. The #ytmnd IRC channel (or "room") is especially hard to stay unbanned from, particularly for ex-AOL users who are not used to other people in a channel having any sort of power or regulation over their ability to converse, which is, thank god, entirely the case.

The #ytmnd IRC channel can be found at EFnet. As of May 15th, 2007, the channel was globally juped by EFNet staff, which simply means #ytmnd is not open for the public anymore, and attempting to join it will get you banned for EFnet for 3 days. However, if you use an EFnet server such as 'irc.vel.net', 'irc.efnet.nl', or any other server that doesn't support global jupes, you can still join the channel and chat. But don't expect much of it. It consists mostly of large Pumped ASCII such as bigmatix or a giant image that bares a slight resemblance to Leonidas of Spartan fame.

Join and pay attention a maximum of three times per day, every day, and massage affected area gently until you are banned for pasting ridiculous ASCII art which does not honor the correct control character set for standard clients or have any hard spaces in it. There was also a YTMND-specific IRC server located at irc.ytmnd.com.

Using IRC

You must download client software to connect to any given IRC network. If you are a windows user, you are most likely going to end up using mIRC. Wow. You faggot. Many servers on the more popular networks require you to run a service called ident, which historically was intended to be used by the owner of a computer in order to ensure that connections from his or her computer created by users other than him- or herself could be traced back to that user specifically. Of course, there are no girls on the internet, so forget all that shit I just said about "her". Clients for idiots include their own ident server. mIRC is one of these. Linux server administrators and their teenage faggy-distro-mouse-using-xwindows-crippled cretin counterparts can install one of many "identd" packages to the same end, oidentd likely being the most popular.

#ytmnd / EFNet

There was also a YTMND-specific IRC server located at irc.ytmnd.com. After being ddosed to oblivion, it was sold to host porn, a conclusion drawn simply from the fact that the domain "irc.ytmnd.com" used to show http://sexyhornylesbians.net at the bottom. Max has also confirmed this. Apparently same thing happened with the radio server. Tough luck, Go watch porn instead.

Other channels are #ytmnd2, #?!, #wop, #ytmndongs and #tgubg. All of which are somehow related. Most were created due to regulars being fed up with the ops/other regulars of different ytmnd-related channels. It's all a complex web of the same retardery, so you could just as well join all of them.

#ytmnd2 was started in Apr 17th 2006, after max went nuts. Originally created as a joke between Swishy and a few regulars of #ytmnd. After a series of major events such as the opping of a nazi, the death of a norwegian (twice) and oper drama, it today takes pride in being the number one cruising place on EFnet. #ytmnd2 is in no way related to the irc server ytmnd2.com.
