The Newcomer fad parodies the trailer for the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl, first presented at E3 2006. The trailer introduced several new playable characters (each described as "newcomer"), and culminated with Metal Gear star Solid Snake emerging from his trademark cardboard box.

Most iterations of the fad replace Snake with a different character or alter the context of Snake's entrance. However, any graphic depicting a character with the "Newcomer" chyron can be attributed to the fad.

The fad appears to have begun with malemunyon's site "Samus Naked," luring the unsuspecting user in to find not porn but Snake saying "Surprise, cockfags!" (The line is lifted from the movie Team America: World Police.) According to YTMND, other "newcomers" to Super Smash Bros. Brawl include Conan O'Brien, Richard Nixon, Bill Cosby, the Prophet Mohammed, Phoenix Wright, the King of All Cosmos, and a Tetris block.

The score from the Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailer has naturally become associated with the fad, and is included as a track on YTMND - The Soundtrack Volume 11.
