"The Unfunny Truth About ..." are relatively serious "Investigations" with glowing text on black background and "spooky music". The fad spawned out of a Safety Not Guaranteed investigation as part of the AOTS contest and got a wider audience after it merged with the Scientology fad.
HL2: Episode Two: The Unfunny Truth ((MAJOR SPOILER)) first renamed the fad and The Un-funny Truth About Scientology changed its music.
(Some users named their YTMND "Un-Funny" instead of "Unfunny" and the "-" makes it hard to search for those in a lot of "funny" YTMNDs.)
