The Holy crap fad was first created by CDawg82191 on April 26, 2006. At first, the site featured a blank screen with a period portrayed as a meteor. After users began commenting on the site, a background image was added. The site went through many edits and became the YTMND as is seen now. The "meteor" effect is only possible on YTMND due to the sites use of 3-D text.

YTMNDs of this type often have a variety of different texts, sometimes aligned with the image. The initial song was "Requiem for a Tower", but due to massive complaints about the overuse of the "Fire Spirit" theme, the song was changed to Yasunori Mitsuda's "Lavos's Theme" from the video game Chrono Trigger.
